October is Energy Awareness Month and a great time to begin taking steps to reduce your energy usage and save money at home. Below you will find four simple changes you can make to help prepare for the cooler temperatures ahead.
- Set your thermostat to 68° or lower during colder months. Each degree above 68° can significantly increase your heating bill.
- Install a smart thermostat that automatically lowers the temperature even further than 68° overnight or while no one is at home. Make sure the thermostat is installed properly and is compatible with your HVAC unit.
- Caulk, seal and weather-strip around all seams, cracks, and openings – especially exterior doors and windows – to protect your home from drafts. Check air filters monthly and change them when dirty. Also, check ductwork for leaks and tears.
- Schedule a FREE Home Energy Check-Up. Receive expert energy advice on areas of your home that have the highest impact on your monthly electric bill. With this no-obligation, in-home consultation, you’ll receive free installation of energy-saving products such as LED bulbs, water heater/pipe insulation, an advanced power strip and more.
