As the holidays continue, twinkling lights decorate homes; streets are filled with eager shoppers; and joyous gatherings with loved ones become the heart of the season. Amid the excitement, it's crucial not to overlook the importance of safety. From home decorations and holiday cooking to winter weather and travel, use these tips to help keep your family safe.
Driving
- Before hitting the road, take your car in for maintenance and gas it up (or charge it if it’s an EV).
- Make certain you have snacks, bottled water, a first-aid kit and other supplies in the event of an emergency.
Decorating
- Use ladders safely as you decorate roofs and other places to avoid injury.
- Choose artificial trees that are fire resistant. Keep trees out of doorways and at least 3 feet away from radiators, fireplaces and other heat sources.
- Outdoor LED lights should be used outdoors, and indoor LED lights should be used indoors. Replace lights that have frayed or bare wires, loose connections or repair broken or cracked sockets and consider using advanced power strips with indoor lighting.
- Check package directions for how many light sets can be plugged into one socket. Never tack, stress or nail wiring. Keep plugs off the ground away from snow and puddles. Turn off decorations and lights when you leave the house or go to bed.
Avoiding Fires
- Inspect the fireplace and chimney annually.
- Avoid your risk of fire by being careful around fireplaces and candles and keeping combustible decorations and children away from them.
- Keep candles where they cannot be knocked down or blown over. Use flameless candles around flammable decorations.
- Don’t burn wreaths, wrapping paper or trees in the fireplace and use a safety screen around the fireplace.
- Don’t leave fireplaces or candles burning overnight or unattended.
- Use extra caution around hot stovetops, ovens, pots, pans and other items to avoid getting burned.
Selecting Gifts for Children
- Get toys that are age-appropriate. For kids younger than 10, avoid toys that must be plugged into an electrical outlet.
Put these tips into use so you can stay safe during the holidays.
